5 Easiest Herbs To Grow For

Today I want to talk about 5 easy herbs to grow as a beginner! Your results might vary depending on which zone you are in so, as usual, be sure to check first. So far I have attempted to grow nine different herbs and these five for me were easy to grow from seed and maintain.

Mint

First on our list is mint! These fragrant herbs is excellent for teas, drinks, and a wide variety of deserts. Personally I can’t stand deserts with mint in it but to each their own.

Mint loves the sun! It is a perennial plant and will come back every year, so don’t worry about getting more seeds. I recommend you plant mint in a pot or your and your neighbors entire lawn will be mint. It’s very low maintenance. As long as you water every now and then you will get plenty of fresh mint.

Basil

Basil is a brightly flavored herb used in so many of our favorite Italian dishes. Dried or fresh it brings a unique taste to food, so why not grow your own?

If you are growing tomatoes then basil is perfect! It is an excellent companion plant that deters pest that feed on tomato plants. Unlike most of the herbs on this list, it does not like to be abandoned. Basil loves full sun! Be sure to be more consistent in watering your basil plants because leaves will start to dry and brown.

Oregano

Oregano is a staple herb that my family uses for our dishes! It provides an aromatic flavor that is perfect for food. Oregano can also be used for teas, providing nutritional benefits! Oregano can grow well in pots and in a garden bed. It is a great companion plant for both mint and lemon balm. It likes full sun and doesn’t need much water.

Parsley

Parsley! My favorite herb that doesn’t have much flavor but is perfect nevertheless. There are plenty of parsley varieties out there. My favorite is the curly leaf parsley. It super easy to grow from seed and is best to grow in partial shade. I didn’t run into any particular insect pest however parsley is apparently groundhogs’ favorite herb as well.

Lemon balm

Lemon balm is the citrus smelling cousin of mint. Super easy to grow from seed and also, like it’s sibling, loves the sun. Also like it’s sibling, it will also take over your lawn. In fact it’s so much flashier than it’s sibling that you’ll ask “Where did my mint go?”. It does not help that, despite being pointier, the shape is very similar. I don’t recommend planting this in the same bed as mint. Planting lemon balm may prevent deer from eating your crops and repel mosquitos. When they flower the bees and butterflies love to stop by!
